Each Contraction Is Making You Stronger
Pain is a major topic in my childbirth classes—and for good reason.
Labor is rarely pain-free, but pain doesn’t have to mean suffering.
The key to managing labor pain starts with your perspective.
Ask yourself:
Do you see pain as something to fear and avoid?
Or, is pain a natural part of life?
When you have a headache, do you rush to medicate—or pause, breathe, and listen to your body?
Pain is part of being human—skinned knees, heartbreaks, illness—we’ve all felt it.
What matters most is how we respond to it.
And in childbirth, that response can shape your entire experience.
Whether you choose a hospital birth, home birth, VBAC, epidural, or plan to go unmedicated with the support of a doula, you’ll still need healthy ways to cope with labor pain.
Start with your mind. The thoughts you tell yourself during labor can either empower or overwhelm you.
Instead of, “This hurts so much,”
try,
Each contraction is bringing me closer to my baby.
I am strong.
My body was made for this.
Your mind should be a safe space to birth in.
With support—whether from your partner, or doula—you can meet labor not with fear, but with strength.
