A Personal Take on Your Personal Steak, Placenta Encapsulation
To All Expecting Moms,
I want to share my personal experience about placenta encapsulation.
With my first pregnancy, I was clueless about everything and this was my first postpartum experience:
After the birth of my first child, I was entirely overwhelmed. My body had gone through a traumatic event and no one really told me how to take care of myself; my personal care was completely neglected. I remember stopping off at Walgreens on my way home from the hospital for pads and hygiene items. That is how unprepared I was!!
Needless to say, postpartum was NOT easy!
I was not ready for the emotional highs and lows.
I was not ready for the sleep deprivation, the anxiety, the happy cries and sad break downs.
I was not ready for my body to need so much rest and my baby to need so much from my body.
I was not ready for my breasts to have a mind of their own and become unrecognizable.
I was not ready for my lower region to need weeks to heal.
Postpartum was an event all on its own and, like must of us, I had no reference point.
I felt confused about my overwhelm of this new responsibility.
I felt guilty that I was not happy all the time.
I had tremendous (at least that is what it felt like to me) anxiety about my daughter and her new precious life which seemed so very fragile.
I struggled to breastfeed and had supply issues.
I felt like I was failing as her mother.
I felt very alone, and, at one point thought that I may have postpartum depression…
Luckily, about 6 week postpartum there was a shift and the fog lifted. I recognize now that I had extreme “baby blues,” that interim where your placenta (that takes over hormone production while pregnant) was gone from my body and my normal hormone glands were not up to speed yet. This was a roller coaster for me, and when I got pregnant again, I vowed to take better care of myself!
So, I decided to encapsulated my placenta. I had heard about all the benefits:
Increase in energy
Regulation of hormones
Increase in milk supply
Replenishing iron
There were NO risks - so I hired someone to encapsulate it and I prepared for my postpartum period. I was being proactive about my personal care and promised that I would attend to my own needs better.
I had the pills on about my third day postpartum and took them as I was told. I never missed my dosage and to my surprise I had a total 180 experience from my first. I felt invigorated, I felt "even keel" and even happy, I never really had any break downs and I was taking care of two children. I had plenty of milk and none of the breastfeeding struggles I had with my first. My experience was completely different. My postpartum was quite nice and rather special. Those first few weeks of nesting and settling into a new rhythm with my family.
Now, while I can’t say that it was all due to my placenta. Second time around I was more experienced and prepared; however, I believe, adding my placenta to my care made all the difference!
As a doula and childbirth educator, that works with hundreds of women, I highly recommend encapsulating. There are absolutely NO risks, you have nothing to loose!
